Website brief: what to write before the contract

Without a brief you get “pretty”, not the right thing. The contractor guesses, you get angry at revisions, the deadline slips. This article is for an owner in Uzbekistan: what to write on 1–3 pages before the contract, even if you are not technical. This is not a 40-page GOST. It is a list of decisions without which you cannot honestly name a price and a deadline. How to read people — in pro vs impostor. UZNEO does not take on “make a site” from the phrase “like the competitor, only better”.

01Why the brief is for you, not “them”

A brief locks in: which pages, in which languages, where a lead goes, what is in the price, what counts as handover. Otherwise revisions never end, and “it’s obvious” — it is not. A short brief lowers risk for you and for a decent contractor. For those who want a prepayment and to disappear, a brief gets in the way — that is a filter.

02Block 1 — who you are and why the site

Write in your own words: • service / product, city, who you work for; • why the site: leads, price list, trust, store, bookings; • what it should not be (not a 200-article-a-month blog if there is no author). One offer sentence. If you cannot write it — too early for layout; meaning first. Brochure vs landing — format comparison.
BeforeAfter
“A site for the business”“Leads for cleaning in Tashkent”
Three goals at onceOne main goal for launch
Offer “quality”Offer with the service and the next step

03Block 2 — pages and languages

Table: URL meaning | what is on the page | ready copy exists? (yes/no). Minimum for a service: home, service(s), contacts, policy / offer as needed. Store — catalog, product card, delivery, payment. Languages: RU only, RU+UZ, also EN. Who translates, who approves. Not “Google Translate the whole site” without editing — bilingual SEO.
BeforeAfter
“10–15 pages, however it goes”A list of 6 launch pages
Copy “you will write it” with no dateWho writes, by which day
All languages on day oneMain language first, second stage

04Block 3 — contacts, forms, messengers

Phone in +998 format, WhatsApp / Telegram / both, map, branches, hours. Form: which fields are required, where email/CRM goes, who replies, auto-reply. A Telegram button is not “draw a little plane”: where it leads, with a tag or not — Telegram button.
BeforeAfter
“Contact as usual”+998, messenger, form, who is on duty
A form with no recipientA test lead in the brief as a handover criterion
Three messengers with no priorityOne main + a backup

05Block 4 — content, photos, legal bits

Whose photos: yours / stock / a shoot. Logo and colors exist or “you will pick them”. Details, licenses if the niche requires them. Prices: “from”, a price list, “on request” — how to show price honestly. Store: Payme/Click payment — connecting payments.
BeforeAfter
Photos “you’ll find on the internet”A folder of your photos or a shoot budget
Prices laterA rule at launch
Legal pages forgottenIn the list before ads

06Block 5 — tech and access

Domain and hosting — yours, see domain and hosting. Analytics (GA4), pixel, Google Ads — whose accounts. Responsive: handover only if from a phone you can call and submit the form — mobile checklist. Admin: who will change texts after handover.
BeforeAfter
Ads accounts with the layout personOwner + access
“It’ll do on mobile”Phone acceptance in the brief
Edits only through the contractor foreverClear who edits

07Timelines, stages, what is not included

Write: stage 1 prototype / stage 2 content / stage 3 launch. What is not included: SMM, ads, 20 articles of copy, a photo shoot — if you did not order them. “Done” criterion: it opens on the domain, forms arrive, SSL, analytics is in place, you walked the checklist from a phone. Money and timeline guide — how much a site costs, not instead of a brief.
BeforeAfter
“A site in a week, turnkey, everything”Stages and exclusions
Endless revisions in the price2 rounds of edits, then an addendum

08Mini-template you can copy

1. Site goal in one line. 2. Geo and language(s). 3. List of launch pages. 4. Contacts and messengers. 5. Form: fields and where it goes. 6. Content: who supplies texts and photos, deadline. 7. Domain / hosting — who owns it. 8. Analytics and ad accounts — who owns them. 9. Not included in the work. 10. How we accept (phone, form, SSL). This is enough to compare 2–3 quotes honestly. Choosing a contractor — guide. Build a site from a proper brief — website development / landing.

Summary

A brief before the contract is the owner’s decisions: pages, languages, the lead, access, acceptance. Without that, price and deadline are a guess. One to three pages of text save months of rework. Bringing such a brief to UZNEO is a normal starting point: site or landing.
