10 mistakes when building a business website (and how to fix them calmly)

This article is for a business owner in Tashkent, Samarkand, or the regions: you are building a site from scratch, updating an old one, or already running ads and cannot see why leads are scarce. It often feels like “ads don’t work” or “people won’t leave contacts.” In reality, simple page issues get in the way: awkward on mobile, slow load, unclear button, a form that “sent” but the lead never arrived, no counter — and budget tests holes instead of the offer. Below — 10 common mistakes in one calm format: what’s wrong → why it hurts → how to fix → priority. You’ll find before→after tables, a “what to fix first” order, and a checklist before launching Google Ads. No scare tactics, no borrowed “everyone’s conversion rate” percentages, and no promises that “leads will grow by N%” — only a practical order of work. Terms in plain words: CTA (call to action — the next-step button), HTTPS/SSL (secure address lock), SEO base (title, description, one H1), analytics (counter + goals on the lead).

01Mistakes 1–3: mobile, screen clutter, and the button

In Uzbekistan most visits come from phones. If the owner only checks the site on a laptop in the office on Wi‑Fi, it’s easy to miss what a client sees on 4G in a queue or on the metro. 1. Awkward on mobile (no real responsive layout) Responsive means the layout reads on a narrow screen without horizontal scroll and without pinch-zoom. • Why it hurts: tiny text, cramped buttons, a clipped form — people leave before the offer and price. • How to fix: open the site on a real phone (not only an emulator); readable type, finger-friendly buttons, form and contacts usable without zoom. • Priority: high — fix before any ad scale. 2. Too much on the first screenWhy it hurts: five fonts, a slider, autoplay video, a “−30% discount” pop-up in the first seconds — the eye doesn’t know where to go. The offer drowns. • How to fix: one main idea above the fold, calm typography, fewer layers. Pop-ups after the person has understood the offer. Structure guide — selling landing page. • Priority: high on an ads landing page. 3. No clear next step (CTA)Why it hurts: after the copy it’s unclear — form, Telegram, or call. Some people just close the tab. • How to fix: one main button above the fold and again lower on the page: “Send request”, “Write in Telegram”, “Call”. Secondary actions quieter — they don’t compete with the main one. • Priority: high.

02Mistakes 4–6: speed, HTTPS, and “dead” forms

These three often masquerade as “ads don’t work.” The client already clicked the ad — money is spent. What remains is whether they reach a clear form and whether the lead reaches you. 4. Slow loadWhy it hurts: while the page “thinks” for 5–8 seconds on mobile, some people close the tab. Copy and design don’t matter yet. • How to fix: compress above-the-fold images, remove extra scripts and autoplay video, check mobile PageSpeed before scaling campaigns. Look not only at the “score” but at when main content appears. • Priority: high if ads are planned or already running. 5. No HTTPS (site on HTTP) HTTPS is the address with a lock; an SSL certificate (often Let’s Encrypt) is usually free at the host. • Why it hurts: the browser warns about security; some people won’t leave a phone number; HTTP is weaker for search. • How to fix: enable SSL in hosting / domain panel, check redirect from http:// to https://, update links in ads. • Priority: high — fast and required. 6. Form “sent”, but the lead never arrivesWhy it hurts: there was a click, no lead — quiet loss of budget. The manager thinks “there’s no demand,” while leads sit in a broken inbox or go nowhere. • How to fix: after every site update, walk the customer path: form → confirmation → email / Telegram / CRM. Check “Call” and the Telegram link from a phone. The lead must really arrive — not only show “Thank you.” • Priority: critical — fix immediately; with live ads — stop scaling until delivery works.

03Mistakes 7–9: SEO base, copy, and languages

These items rarely “break” ads in a single day, but they strongly affect search and trust. Before Ads, basic order is enough; for organic — higher priority. 7. Empty SEO base Title — tab and Google snippet headline; description — short line under it; H1 — main on-page heading (one). • Why it hurts: identical or empty meta, several H1s — Google understands the page worse; organic barely grows. • How to fix: unique title/description on important pages, one H1, clear H2/H3 hierarchy. Start — SEO audit and technical SEO. • Priority: medium before Ads; high if the goal is search without constant ads. 8. Same or borrowed copyWhy it hurts: competitor copy-paste or one paragraph for every service confuses people and search; pages compete with each other (cannibalization). • How to fix: each important page gets its own copy for its own job: who you help, what you offer, how you differ, what the next step is. Short and clear beats lots of identical filler. • Priority: medium–high on key services and landings. 9. One language for everyoneWhy it hurts: in Uzbekistan people often search in Russian and Uzbek (sometimes English for B2B/export). One language narrows the audience. • How to fix: at least key pages in the languages people actually use to find you. You don’t have to translate the whole blog in month one: start with home, services, and contacts. The language switcher must lead to a real translation, not the same page. • Priority: medium — after a working form, mobile UX, and HTTPS.

04Mistake 10: no analytics and goals — plus what’s often skipped

10. No analytics and goals Analytics — a visit counter (e.g. Google Analytics or similar) plus goals: form submit, phone click, Telegram click. Without that, “ads don’t work” stays a guess. • Why it hurts: you can’t see where traffic comes from, which pages are viewed, or whether the lead arrives. Budget runs blind; you can’t tell a weak offer from a broken form. • How to fix: install the counter before the campaign; mark goals on leads and contacts; send a test lead and confirm the event fires — then scale traffic. • Priority: high before Google Ads. What else is often skipped (without a separate “disaster”): • Real photos and short cases — easier to trust than stock images. • A Telegram button — in UZ many prefer writing to calling from an unknown number. • A CRM link — so leads don’t get lost in managers’ personal chats. • Small legal basics: contacts, TIN/details where appropriate, form privacy note — less “fly-by-night” feel. If traffic is alive but leads are few — see why the site doesn’t bring leads.

05What to fix first: order without panic

Don’t fix everything at once. First what makes ads and search pointless without it; then what strengthens conversion and organic.
StageWhat to doWhy
Before any trafficWorking form / call / Telegram; usable mobile; HTTPS; analytics + goalOtherwise budget and time leak into a hole
Before Ads scaleAbove-the-fold speed; fewer pop-ups; title/description and one H1 on the landingClient reaches the offer and knows the step
For search and growthOwn copy; needed languages; cases; CRMOrganic and repeat contact
First (before any paid traffic): 1. Working form / call / Telegram — the lead really arrives. 2. Usable phone layout and a clear above-the-fold button. 3. HTTPS. 4. Analytics and at least one goal on the lead. Next (before scaling ads): 5. Above-the-fold speed on mobile. 6. Fewer distracting pop-ups and autoplay video. 7. Title/description and one H1 on the landing. Later (for search and growth): 8. Your own copy on key services. 9. Languages you actually need. 10. Cases, reviews, CRM link. If ads already run and the form is silent — stop scaling and fix lead delivery. Otherwise budget tests a hole, not the offer.

06Checklist before launching ads

A short check before you pour traffic. Answer honestly — better 20 minutes now than a week of “unclear” spend. 1. Does everything read on a phone without zoom? 2. Does the page open acceptably on mobile data (not only office Wi‑Fi)? 3. Did a test lead reach email, Telegram, or CRM? 4. Does “Call” go to the right number? 5. Is HTTPS in the address, and does http:// redirect to https://? 6. Are title and description filled and not identical on every page? 7. Are analytics and goals in place, and is the test event visible? 8. Is there one clear action button above the fold? 9. Is there an extra pop-up covering the offer in the first seconds? 10. Does the Telegram / WhatsApp link open on a phone?

If several answers are “no” — fix the base first. Otherwise ads will test weak spots instead of bringing leads.

07How to build the base right the first time

It’s easier to build in mobile, speed, a working form, SEO base, and analytics from the start than to patch them under live ads. A “quick template” often costs more in a month of rebuilds. At UZNEO we build sites on Next.js via web development: solid speed, responsive layout, forms into a Telegram bot, basic SEO setup. Formats:Landing — usually 5–7 days, for ads: one offer, clear CTA, fast first screen. • Corporate site — usually 10–14 days, for services and SEO: page structure, meta, contacts. • Online store — with Payme, Click, Uzum: catalog, cart, payment. One clear site with a working form usually beats several templates you rebuild later. On platforms — WordPress, Tilda, or Next.js.

Summary

Common website mistakes are not disasters — they are ordinary gaps: mobile, speed, button, form, HTTPS, SEO base, copy, languages, analytics. Simple order: mobile usability and lead delivery first, ads second; SEO and languages in parallel or next, depending on the goal. If you recognised your site — start with the checklist above or an SEO audit and targeted fixes. Need a site from scratch without these basic holes — development and landings from UZNEO.
