How to create a Telegram bot yourself

How to create a Telegram bot yourself

You can build a simple Telegram bot yourself when it answers a few questions and passes enquiries to a person. Registration and a working service are different things: a name and token do not create a menu, order records or manager notifications. Start with a small testable task for a fictional workshop.

01Write the conversation first

The first version explains opening hours, shows services and accepts estimate requests. Map the whole conversation: greeting, service choice, required information, review, submission and handover. Include a human-contact option and a way to correct answers. Collect only necessary information, explain why contact details are needed and identify who replies. Test the wording on paper before choosing a platform.

02Register through the official BotFather

Use /newbot in the official BotFather and follow its instructions. You receive a token, the secret key controlling the bot. See the official Telegram tutorial. Do not expose it in chats, screenshots or public code. If disclosed, revoke it through BotFather and update the connected system. Keep the owner account and access records under business control.

03Connect logic and enquiry storage

A bot needs a builder or program to provide responses. Builders can suit simple menus; custom development can handle particular rules and integrations. Check current pricing, limits, export and data ownership first.
FeatureWhat to test
MenuClear replies and a back option
EnquiryDestination and responsible person
FailureWhat the customer sees
MigrationExport of flow and data
Free registration does not make every connected service free.

04Test both sides of the handover

Try a normal request, empty answers, unexpected text and a duplicate submission. Check human handover and behaviour after a restart. Confirm acceptance only after successful saving or delivery. The manager should receive the required information and be able to locate the enquiry later. A customer receiving an acceptance message while no record exists is a workflow failure, even if all buttons look correct. Assign responsibility for errors and support.

05Recognise the limits of a simple version

Payments, stock, appointments and CRM add state and failure rules. A repeated payment notification must not create another order; unavailable CRM should not silently lose an enquiry. These need explicit handling and tests. Use the first version as a requirements example. Showing a problematic conversation is more useful than requesting a copy of a competitor. Compare bots and Mini Apps when an interface becomes necessary.

06Frequently asked questions

Does BotFather make the bot operational? It creates the bot account. Responses and actions still require a builder or application. Must I write code? A simple menu may work in a builder. Complex rules, payments and integrations need separate assessment. Where should enquiries be stored? In an agreed system accessible to the responsible employee. A chat notification alone does not replace reliable records. What should a developer receive? The conversation, required fields, roles, integrations and failure examples. Share secrets through an agreed secure method.
